Dublin Zoo: an illustrated history (new edition)

2019. New edition. Commissioned by Dublin Zoo and published by Mabel Wray Press for Dublin Zoo.

The new edition of the illustrated history brings to story up to date. Nearly two centuries of history are richly illustrated with special emphasis on the last 25 years, which have consolidated Dublin Zoo’s position as a leader in wildlife conservation and education. The focus remains on the animals, the visitors and the keepers, many of whom are well known to visitors through The Zoo television programme. With more than 260 illustrations, over 50 percent of the images were not in the 2009 edition and some, including some from the early twentieth century photos, have not been published previously. This edition includes photos sent to the Zoo by visitors, the earliest of these dating from 1930.

2009. Commissioned by Dublin Zoo and published by The Collins Press, Cork.

The first published history of Dublin Zoo from its beginnings in 1830 to 2009.

Tim Brown of the Independent Zoo Enthusiasts Society said that this was ‘Probably the best every history of a zoo on these islands.’ The first published history of Dublin Zoo, the well-illustrated book traces the Zoo’s evolution from its foundation through the good times and the bad. The focus is on the animals and the visitors, the major events, the interaction between visitors and animals including elephant rides and chimpanzee tea parties. The book brings out the importance of education from the earliest days when the founders wanted to encourage sensitivity and kindness towards animals. This edition ends in 2009.
