2003. Published by Quiddlers Press, Melbourne.

A history of Melbourne Zoo from its early days as a struggling acclimatisation society to its success in the later nineteenth century during the heady days of Marvellous Melbourne.

This book is based on Catherine’s Master of Arts thesis for the University of Melbourne history faculty in 1989.  It also includes a CD of Catherine’s index to the minutes of the Melbourne Zoo governing authority, which served as the backbone to her research.  The CD includes copies of more than 70 images, which Catherine sourced while acting as Melbourne Zoo’s honorary historian from 1989 to 2003, as well as complete reproductions of four of the Zoo’s early guidebooks. It was published just before she left Australia in 2003.  Researchers who would like a digital copy of the index should contact Catherine via the contact form on this website.
